Balgarianovinite.com Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, Yes, Bulgaria co-leader and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) MP Ivaylo Mirchev called for the Consultative Council for National Security (CCNS) to be convened, a clear government position and an end to bowing to Russia and Putin.
The statement comes after on Tuesday, the German government accused Russia of an unsuccessful attack involving an explosive-laden drone targeting Leipzig/Halle Airport. Germany announced a series of retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, the termination of the agreement with the Russian House of Culture in Berlin, and additional sanctions.
Mirchev noted that Iliana Iotova had been President for eight months, while the most recent CCNS meeting had been convened to discuss the threats of vaping among the youth during the time Rumen Radev was President.
“All our allies, EU Member States and NATO members expressed solidarity and mentioned Russia. The only country that did not mention Russia is Bulgaria. There is no position from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – all I have seen is a social media post saying that we stand in solidarity, and that was it,” Mirchev said.
“While Russia is attempting to carry out an attack in Germany, Bulgaria is busy trying to remove a controversial Russian minister from the sanctions list. Instead of a clear position from the Bulgarian government, once again there is a tendency to keep a low profile and not address the issue,” the MP added.
DB MP and Deputy Parliament Chair Atanas Atanassov pointed out that in August, foreign media published information including interviews with several senior officials about the reliability of the security services of EU and NATO Member States.
“Bulgaria’s assessment there is zero, meaning that our country is not considered reliable,” Atanasov said. He questioned how the government planned to restructure the security system and said that people appointed to senior positions in the security services by Rumen Radev when he was President in 2021, were being reinstated to leadership positions.
GERB-UDF also called on the president to convene a CCNS meeting over the hybrid attack in Leipzig.
