Balgarianovinite.com At its regular meeting on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers authorized a derogation from the restrictive measures imposed in response to Russia’s actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, the government said in a press release.
The derogation will allow Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to import from Russia iron and steel products listed in an annex to Wednesday’s decision. The products are required for the implementation of an existing contract of the nuclear power plant, and the derogation will remain in effect until the contract expires.
A key priority in the operation of Kozloduy NPP is maintaining the highest standards of technical and nuclear safety and radiation protection, ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, and protecting the environment. Regular deliveries of components and spare parts from the designers, engineers and manufacturers of the equipment installed at the plant are essential to ensuring nuclear safety and reliable, accident-free electricity generation. As a significant portion of the plant’s systems and equipment is of Russian origin, some contracts for the supply of goods necessary for the reliable and safe operation of Units 5 and 6 at Kozloduy NPP have been, or need to be, concluded with Russian contractors.
The Council of Ministers stressed that Kozloduy NPP is Bulgaria’s only nuclear power plant and the country’s largest electricity producer. It accounts for more than one-third of Bulgaria’s annual electricity generation. This, combined with its high operational safety and reliable electricity supplies, makes the plant a key factor in the stability of the national power system and in the country’s energy security.
