Balgarianovinite.com A photo exhibition featuring works by contemporary German photographer Ulrich Wust will open on September 10 at the Sofia City Art Gallery, the organizers announced.
Curator Matthias Flugge will attend the opening of the exhibition, titled Wanderings About History: The Photography of Ulrich Wust. Guided tours of the exhibition, led by art historian Jenny Decheva, will take place on October 3 and 31 and on November 21.
The exhibition features more than 120 archival photographs, predominantly black-and-white pigment prints. Wust’s professional experience as an urban planner and photo editor has shaped his distinctive photographic approach: analytical, precise, and rigorously composed. His interest is focused less on historical ruins or traces of war than on the absurdities and contradictions generated by urban planning: the demolition of existing architecture, indiscriminate construction, and the inept transformation of the urban environment, the exhibition team said. Through his neutral, predominantly black-and-white images, he creates a distinctive visual critique of architecture, without adopting a direct ideological position, the organizers explained.
A catalogue, published by Spector Books, will also be available during the exhibition, which ends on November 22.
Wanderings About History: The Photography of Ulrich Wust is an exhibition by the IFA (Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen Stuttgart / Institute for International Cultural Relations), presented at the Sofia City Art Gallery in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria. It is the fourth exhibition at the Sofia City Art Gallery to focus on contemporary German photography, following presentations of Sibylle Bergemann (2022), Barbara Klemm (2023), and Helga Paris (2024).
Ulrich Wust was born in 1949 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Architecture and Construction in Weimar with a degree in urban planning. Until 1983, he worked in East Berlin as an urban planner and photo editor. In 1984, he began working as a freelance photographer in Berlin and Schonhof / Mecklenburg. He is the recipient of the 2000 Helen Abbott Prize and the 2021 Art Prize of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.
