Balgarianovinite.com Activists from Greenpeace Bulgaria spread out a huge banner in the Black Sea waters off Burgas with the message “GAS IS A SCAM”. Greenpeace’s ship Arctic Sunrise also took part in the action, Greenpeace Bulgaria Communications and Digital Engagement head Gabriela Garlanova said. The campaign of the organization is a warning against plans for new oil and gas exploration and extraction in Bulgarian waters.
“The demonstration comes against the backdrop of upcoming oil and gas exploration in the Khan Tervel block, located within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. The corporations that will benefit from the concession have already been selected, and sonar mapping of the seabed is due to take place. Through this action, Greenpeace Bulgaria is challenging the misleading claims that fossil gas is a clean fuel and a source of revenue for the state budget, as well as the claim that extracting gas from the Black Sea would guarantee energy security and affordable energy. The arguments against new drilling are both purely economic and related to protecting marine life. The idea of domestic gas as a cheap fuel is the first illusion because even if deposits are discovered and Bulgaria begins extraction, this will not reduce Bulgarians’ energy bills. Gas prices depend on international markets, which will continue to determine how much people in Bulgaria pay for this fuel, even if it is extracted in our own waters,” the organization said. According to Greenpeace Bulgaria, the only real beneficiary in this case would be the concession holder operating the deposit.
Unlike some other countries, Bulgaria is well positioned to avoid the fossil gas trap and transform its energy system so that it is resilient to future crises, through decentralization and by involving citizens as energy-producing consumers, through renewable sources such as solar and wind power, waste heat, and energy-storage systems, including seasonal storage.
“Bulgaria can implement such proven solutions immediately, instead of handing over the Black Sea to corporations that profit the most when everyone else pays the price,” Greenpeace Bulgaria Campaigns Manager Desislava Mikova said.
