Balgarianovinite.com The Dragalevtsi case is about two signal jammers, not one, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told reporters on Thursday, on his way to a hearing at the parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order.
Initially, the authorities reported that a powerful signal jammer was located and neutralized in a heavily guarded complex in Sofia’s Dragalevtsi quarter. The State Agency for National Security broke the news on August 21. The device was suppressing GPS signal frequencies across Sofia, including at Sofia Airport, affecting aircraft flying over the city and television towers.
In his remarks to the media on Thursday, Demerdzhiev said that one device was installed inside a building, while the other was in a vehicle. The authorities found that parts of the devices had been removed. “We will look for the parts of the devices. All such cases in which such devices are used without being authorized by law will be handled in exactly the same way,” the minister said.
According to Demerdzhiev, there are no grounds for suspecting an information leak within the Interior Ministry. “I immediately instructed the Internal Security Directorate to investigate the case, but at the moment when we were informed and our assistance was requested, the operation was being led by the State Agency for National Security, together with employees of the Communications Regulation Commission. In fact, the information that such employees were there was leaked by the commission’s own employees, and our forces became involved much later. The events should have been organized differently, but the police were not in charge up to that point,” Demerdzhiev explained. He added that employees had been at the site for about half an hour before the Interior Ministry arrived.
On August 24, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that the jammer in Dragalevtsi was installed on a jeep, whose owner was known.
During the investigation, witnesses have been questioned and six searches have been carried out at different addresses. Recording devices, computer equipment, technology and one vehicle have been seized, the Sofia District Prosecution Office said. Officers from the Sofia Directorate of the Interior Ministry identified and seized a jeep equipped with components of a professional signal-jamming system. The vehicle’s ownership is linked to the owners of properties in Dragalevtsi that are the subject of the investigation.
