Bulgaria-China Economic Commission to Meet in Beijing on September 10 2026

Balgarianovinite.com An official Bulgarian delegation will travel to Beijing for the 19th session of the Bulgaria-China Intergovernmental Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation. The delegation will be led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev, who co-chairs the Commission, Poulev’s ministry said on Saturday.
The Joint Commission will meet on September 10, according to information released by the Bulgarian government in late August.
The session will review cooperation between Bulgaria and China and address current issues in bilateral economic relations and opportunities to expand partnership in a number of areas, including investment, trade, innovation and digital transformation, transport, energy, social policy, agriculture and food, environment and water, tourism, and culture, the Economy Ministry reported.
It quoted Poulev as saying: “After the 18th session was held in Sofia last year, we are now continuing the dialogue in Beijing with a specific focus on industrial cooperation, the automotive industry, decarbonization and green technologies.”
The Deputy PM went on to comment: “We continue to work as a priority with all our Euro-Atlantic partners. At the same time, we must use Bulgaria’s full potential as a full member of the EU and the eurozone and diversify economic cooperation with countries in the Middle East and Far East when this is in the interest of the Bulgarian economy and consumers. We are activating joint commissions and economic dialogue with a number of partners in Asia as a real instrument for diversifying partnerships and attracting new investment.”
“In China, our main focus will be the automotive sector – one of the structurally important sectors of the Bulgarian economy. The sector contributes more than 10% to Bulgaria’s GDP, has a developed ecosystem of more than 380 companies and 38 R&D centres, and provides employment for 85,000 people. This is a sector that has achieved huge success in Bulgaria, but today it faces serious challenges globally,” Poulev said.
“We can attract investment, technology and production, and create new opportunities for Bulgarian companies within the automotive ecosystem. This will benefit our automotive sector, which is structurally important,” he added.
“If the sector fails to adapt to the changing global environment, it risks becoming the next problem area for the Bulgarian economy. We will not allow that to happen,” he vowed.
While in China, Poulev and Bulgarian businesspeople will attend the opening of the China International Fair for Investment and Trade in Xiamen, a port city on the country’s southeastern coast.
Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov, one of the government officials to accompany Deputy PM Poulev to the Joint Commission session in Beijing, will meet with Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Sun Yeli to discuss prospects for deepening cooperation, the Tourism Ministry in Sofia reported.
The press release noted that China is one of the world’s most significant and rapidly developing tourism markets. In 2025, the country welcomed 68 million international visitors, while spending by foreign tourists reached USD 135 billion. Forecasts for 2026 indicate that China is expected to once again become the world’s largest outbound tourism market, with spending by Chinese tourists abroad projected to reach USD 280 billion.
For Bulgaria, this represents significant and still underdeveloped potential to attract more Chinese tourists and position the country as an attractive destination, the Tourism Ministry said.
