Balgarianovinite.com Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv Sunday said: “Let’s be peacemakers, encourage others to be peacemakers too, and be united in the principles bequeathed to us by our Lord Jesus Christ.” He officiated a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God marking the city’s holiday and the 141st anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.
“The Unification as an event in our history cannot be considered outside the idea of peacemaking,” the Metropolitan said, adding that everyone should be a peacemaker today – every father and mother, teacher, doctor and social worker – while the role of artists and public figures is particularly important.
Bulgaria will be united only when the teachings of Christ are followed, he said. The Metropolitan stressed that in the Church, people are united with Jesus Christ and form one with Him. “This is the first and fundamental unification, based on love and respect for the dignity of every human being. Without it, no other unification is possible, and I think this is increasingly being understood,” Metropolitan Nikolay said.
Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov told reporters: “Had it not been for Plovdiv 141 years ago, there would be no Bulgaria as we know it today.” He called for September 6 to be more than just a date passed on to children, but a symbol reminding us that differences should not divide us, that unity begins with respect for those around us, and that great things can be achieved when we know how to stand together.
Dimitrov also highlighted Plovdiv’s exceptional history as Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city. “The self-sacrifice of Plovdiv’s people in giving up the possibility of having the city as the capital, with the broader vision of a united Bulgaria, is what matters on this day,” the Mayor said.
Also attending the service were Plovdiv Regional Governor Georgi Yanev, Municipal Council Chair Atanas Uzunov, Bulgaria’s Military Representative to the NATO and EU Military Committees Lt. Gen. Yavor Mateev, Brig. Gen. Bozhidar Boykov, Commander of the Joint Special Operations Command, municipal councillors and district mayors.
A ceremonial company from the Joint Special Operations Command and the Command’s military band took part in the event.
