‘Gross on So Many Levels’: Texas QB Arch Manning Sparks Outrage for Laughing at AI-Generated Video of Reporter 2026

University of Texas quarterback Arch Manning sparked a wave of outrage for laughing at an AI-generated video of his coach assaulting a female reporter.

Moments after the Longhorns’ thrilling comeback win over Ohio State on Saturday, sideline reporter Holly Rowe was preparing to interview Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. Before she could even get a question out, however, Sarkisian walked off and rejoined the rest of his team. Rowe turned around and appeared visibly frustrated by the situation.

On Monday, a reporter asked Manning during a press conference if he had seen “any edits on TikTok or Twitter” from the game. That’s when Manning brought up an AI-generated video depicting Sarkisian slapping Rowe.

“I saw an AI video of Sarks earlier,” Manning said as he began to laugh. “Y’all have seen that one? That’s a good one! Of him slapping Holly Rowe.”

The press in the room also laughed.

“I saw the AI Edit of (Sark) slapping Holly Rowe.”

That display prompted swift backlash from other figures in sports media. Fellow sideline reporter Tricia Whitaker called the clip “gross on so many levels,” saying:

Imagine Holly Rowe’s face in that despicable AI video was your daughter’s. Your wife’s. Your sister’s.

This is gross on so many levels. And no, this isn’t people being “too sensitive” or “easily offended.”

Joking about this in a room full of media members and seeing everyone laugh like this? Shame on you.

A woman being hit isn’t a punchline. Tell that to a domestic violence survivor. Sickening.

Holly Rowe is a phenomenal reporter who has spent decades earning respect in this industry. Some things just aren’t funny.

In response to the backlash, Evan Vieth — the reporter who posted the video — apologized for describing Manning’s comments as “gold.” In a statement posted on social media, Vieth said:

Yesterday, I published a tweet of Arch Manning responding to a question of mine, where he mentioned seeing an AI video of Steve Sarkisian slapping Holly Rowe.

I captioned his response as “gold.”

I realized quickly that I had made a mistake and was far too hasty in publishing the video without further context and with an inappropriate caption.

For that, I am deeply sorry.

I originally asked Manning if he had seen any of the TikTok creator edits from the weekend, ones where his celebration is shown over music and fans had taken their own creative spin on a massive win. I hadn’t seen the video he was referring to, so in the fast-paced setting of a press conference, I acted far too fast in hitting send on a tweet that I regret.

That’s not an excuse. Captioning Manning’s response with “gold” trivialized an AI video depicting violence against a colleague, and that is a mistake I deeply regret.

Hours later, Manning came out with an apology of his own.

“In my press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an Al video,” Manning said in a statement posted on Instagram. “There is nothing funny about it. It’s easy to say I didn’t mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. I do not take that lightly and am deeply sorry for that.

“I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she has personally had to deal with because of my comments. I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in this moment. I need to do better and will be more thoughtful going forward.”
