Scott Jennings hit back at critics who questioned his private phone calls with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) while he was hospitalized.
McConnell was seen for the first time in public in months on Monday as he returned to the U.S. Senate following a hospital stay after a fall at his home in June.
Jennings spoke publicly about his private calls with McConnell and gave updates on the senator’s status as the lack of statements and photographs from McConnell’s team sparked questions and conspiracy theories about the 84-year-old’s health.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I have breaking news today. The telephone is real. Apparently, two human beings can still speak without a camera crew, a live stream, or a notarized certificate of authenticity,” Jennings said Tuesday on Salem’s The Scott Jennings Show.
Jennings, who has described McConnell as a mentor, noted that he was publicly challenged at times to call McConnell on live television, something he refused to do. He blasted “certain bottom-feeding media outlets and pundits” for questioning his communications with McConnell.
Jennings said:
Normally, a senator returning to work after a medical absence would not require a media correction, but this return settles one of the strangest and dumbest conspiracy theories of the summer. While Senator McConnell was hospitalized and recovering… I told people something very simple. I had spoken to him on the telephone, not through a medium, not with a Ouija board, not through CIA satellite. He called me. We talked for nearly 20 minutes. We spoke again a few weeks later. I visited him in the hospital and then I saw him at his home just this past Saturday night. He was following the news. He wanted to discuss Iran, Russia, Ukraine, the Senate business, the politics of the day. I reported on CNN that he was recovering at home, that he wanted to return when the Senate reconvened, and that he remained especially interested in the Farm Bill, national defense, and America’s role in NATO. Those were the facts as I personally knew them. But facts were not exciting enough for certain bottom-feeding media outlets and pundits. They decided I must be lying. They demanded proof of life. They wanted me to FaceTime McConnell on live television.
He continued blasting the media, accusing outlets of feeding into the idea of a political coverup.
Jennings said:
Articles analyzed every syllable that I uttered. One headline claimed I’d been cornered. Another said I was fleeing questions. Still another investigated my phone call claims. Phone call claims? As though I would invent a conversation with one of the most consequential politicians of the last century, a man that I’ve known personally for the last 30 years. Some people convinced themselves McConnell was dead. Others imagined an elaborate conspiracy involving his family, doctors, staff, and apparently me to fool the country. Now think about that logically for a moment. If you were planning an enormous political coverup, would you really make Scott Jennings the public face of the operation?
The CNN political commentator admitted McConnell’s team’s public communications were not “particularly well handled by his operation.”
“Asking legitimate questions is one thing. Calling everyone who provides an answer a liar is something else,” he said.
He then gave himself an “I told you so!” moment to gloat.
“The conspiracy theorists won’t apologize, of course. The websites won’t retract their sneering headlines. The people who accuse me of fabricating conversations should delete their posts before moving along to tomorrow’s hoaxes. But I won’t hold my breath. I did, however, save the receipts. So allow your humble reporter this brief moment of mature and dignified reflection. I told you so!” he said.
