Republican Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) held nothing back on Friday in criticizing Donald Trump Jr. for accepting a lavish wedding gift from a Putin-linked Russian oligarch, calling the present “corruption.”
ProPublica reported on Monday that Umar Kremlev paid for part of Trump Jr’s wedding celebration in the Bahamas earlier in the summer, a party that was attended by the likes of Jared Kushner and other Trump-linked business tycoons.
Curtis, who replaced Mitt Romney in the Senate, made the comments in a video he released highlighting his “Highs and Lows” for the week.
After hyping legislation he’s working on to combat wildfires in Utah, Curtis moved on to the lows.
“Now, my lows — literally a whole litany. Unfortunately, there’s no shortage of lows this week,” Curtis began, adding:
Let’s start with gas prices. They’re reaching new highs, particularly in Utah. Everybody’s really grumpy about how much it costs to fill a tank, and we’re not seeing any relief on these prices coming at us across the board.
Another low: interest rates. The Fed raised interest rates a quarter point because inflation has worsened — I think we all have to admit that.
“Another low, believe this: a Russian oligarch paid for a lavish wedding after-party for Donald Trump Jr., which, to me, just stinks. It’s corruption. I don’t like it. I want to be careful because I don’t want to just talk about this passively — you’ll hear more from me later on. This is a big deal,” Curtis said, making clear he was not done with the issue. He added:
Americans are also concerned about AI data centers and how that will affect their lives and the lives of their children. And my frustration — the reason it’s a low as well — is that we’re not adequately addressing any of this in Washington, D.C. In fact, we seem to be focused on issues that, quite frankly, many of you don’t even care about right now. I’m working hard to change that.
This week, I called for public hearings on cutting-edge AI development. I’m on the committee of jurisdiction and joined with a Democrat to call for those. I’m working on bills that I hope will bring costs down and improve overall affordability. But it’s a low, quite frankly, to be here in Washington and see that, as a collective, we’re just not doing what we should be doing to deal with the issues you care about.
