During a commemorative ceremony in Balchik marking the 86th anniversary of the town’s liberation the Minister of Tourism, Ilin Dimitrov, said that Balchik is turning into an attractive tourism destination, where every visitor can enjoy the beauty of the town, the great infrastructure, and the Balchik Palace. Dimitrov stressed the importance of remembering the value of freedom and honouring those who sacrificed their lives for it. The Tourism Minister recalled the history of the Balchik Palace and its connection with Romanian Queen Marie, who chose Balchik as her summer residence. The Minister highlighted the town’s potential to attract visitors through cultural events, pointing out to the more than 1,500 people attending the Sea of Rhythms folklore festival. Balchik was liberated on September 7, 1940, following the signing of the Treaty of Craiova, under which Romania returned Southern Dobrudzha to Bulgaria. The agreement ended 27 years of Romanian administration of the region, which had been placed under Romanian control following the Second Balkan War in 1913. September 7 is commemorated annually in Balchik as the Day of the Liberation of Southern Dobrudzha and the town’s return to Bulgaria.
