The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency confirmed an outbreak of smallpox in sheep and goats at two epidemiologically connected livestock farms in the village of Vasil Levski, Karlovo Municipality, Plovdiv Region, the Agency announced.
The farmer noticed the appearance of clinical signs of the disease and reported the case to the competent authorities. He has cooperated fully with the veterinary authorities. 324 sheep and 10 goats are kept at the farms, BFSA said. The owner is entitled to compensation under the Veterinary Medicine Act.
Measures have been taken to control and eradicate the disease, in accordance with the provisions of EU and national legislation. A 5 km protection zone and a 20 km surveillance zone have been established around the outbreak.
Restrictive measures are being introduced in the settlements falling within the designated protection and surveillance zones, including a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, with the exception of animals intended for immediate slaughter under specified conditions. Animals must be kept in enclosed pans, and at livestock holdings within both zones, an animal count will be carried out and data updated in the VetIS Integrated Information System, alongside official veterinary inspections.
Special requirements apply to the movement and processing of raw milk from the affected areas, in accordance with current legislation.
An epizootic investigation is being carried out to trace the movement of animals, products, feed and vehicles linked to the outbreak.
The disease poses no danger to humans, but its spread can cause significant economic losses.
The Plovdiv Food Safety Regional Directorate immediately reacted to the report and, together with the local authorities, is coordinating the implementation of all necessary measures to bring the situation under control and prevent the spread of the disease.
The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency urges farmers to exercise increased vigilance and strictly adhere to biosafety measures. Regular monitoring of animals is essential for the early detection of the disease. If there is any suspicion of smallpox in animals, a vet should be notified immediately. Prompt reporting is crucial to limiting the spread of the disease.
