Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) endorsed Republican Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) for re-election on Monday in a new editorial in which he threw his support behind the congressman and praised him as “a true partner.”
Golden, who is leaving Congress at the end of his term, made the unusual endorsement in the article published in a local news outlet, pointing to years of bipartisan work with Lawler and urging voters in New York’s 17th District to return the Republican to the House.
Lawler is seeking another term against Democratic nominee Cait Conley in the suburban Hudson Valley district, a seat both parties are targeting as they fight for control of the House.
“Mike Lawler has been a true partner to me and a friend to fishing families he will never represent,” Golden wrote. “I strongly back him, and I hope voters send him back to work.”
Golden’s endorsement comes after the pair worked together on the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, legislation designed to extend a pause on certain federal regulations affecting the lobster and Jonah crab fisheries until 2035. The measure passed the House earlier this month by a 219-196 vote after advancing through the Natural Resources Committee with bipartisan support. It has since been sent to the Senate.
Lawler’s district has no lobster fishery of its own, a point Golden highlighted while arguing that the New York Republican had backed the measure despite receiving little direct political benefit from it.
“That is how Congress is supposed to work: members of different parties set aside their disagreements, find a problem that matters to the country and fix it,” Golden wrote.
Lawler welcomed Golden’s backing:
“While we are from different parties and different states, Jared and I have worked during our time together in the House to find common ground on issues that matter both to us and our constituents,” Lawler said.
The endorsement adds another twist to Golden’s increasingly strained relationship with his own party. Earlier this month, Golden and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) broke with Democratic leadership to help Republicans advance legislation through closely contested procedural votes, prompting anger among some House Democrats.
