Invisible Animals launched its Weeks in a Cage protest outside Parliament on Wednesday to press MPs to honour their pledges to ban keeping calves in individual isolation cages.
The protest will last at least two weeks, with around 200 volunteers taking 12-hour shifts to maintain a round-the-clock presence, the organization’s Chair Stefan Dimitrov said.
Dimitrov said Bulgaria still allowed calves to be separated from their mothers immediately after birth, confined to narrow individual isolation cages and kept behind iron bars for months. “This is inhumane and cruel. And it has no place in the 21st century,” he said.
He noted that the organization submitted more than 150,000 signatures to Parliament in June, describing the petition as one of the largest in Bulgaria’s history. He cited polling agencies’ findings that 82% of Bulgarian citizens supported ending the practice. “Moreover, 50 MPs promised before the elections to support legislative amendments restricting the keeping of calves in individual cages. There have been no such amendments so far, and we are here to remind those MPs and Parliament of their commitment and the answer they owe on this moral issue,” Dimitrov said.
The cause had the support not only of 150,000 Bulgarian citizens, 82% of the public, experts and veterinarians, but also of farmers and some of the largest and most representative industry organizations, he said. Farmers who had removed their cages said their calves were developing much better, with less disease, lower mortality and, ultimately, better results for the farmers themselves, he added.
In May, Invisible Animals activists protested inside cages to call for humane treatment of calves. They urged legislative changes to guarantee cage-free rearing.
