Bulgaria’s Georgi Georgiev won a world veterans judo title in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Wednesday.
The Athens 2004 Olympic bronze medallist won all four bouts in the under-73 kg category, securing the title with a golden-score victory over Brazil’s Bahjet Hayek in the final.
He had earlier beaten opponents from Italy and France by ippon before defeating Argentina’s Gaston Paludi in golden score in the semi-final.
Georgiev was making his veterans championship debut. He coaches the national team and is director of the sports school in Pazardzhik.
His previous medal was bronze at the 2007 European Championships in Belgrade.
His many honours at major competitions include the 2006 Paris title, which made him the first Bulgarian to win the prestigious tournament, now a Grand Slam event.
Georgi Shishkov finished fifth in the under-81 kg category, narrowly missing the podium. Denislav Zlatanov won bronze in the under-90 kg category on Tuesday.
The championships have drawn 1,350 competitors from 65 countries.
