President Iliana Iotova and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met in New York on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly general debate, and discussed a number of issues, including the ongoing conflicts, the President’s Press Secretariat said. Guterres thanked Bulgaria for its active participation in the policies and activities of the UN.
Iotova congratulated Guterres on his speech at the opening of the UN General Assembly, noting that he had repeatedly mentioned the need for peace amid 60 ongoing armed conflicts around the world. “We must all work for a solution to these conflicts because people do not want wars,” she said.
Iotova and Guterres stressed the need for negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, which has entered its fifth year. Iotova again said that the European Union should play an active role in the process rather than remain an observer.
