PM Radev Says Authorities Tracing Assets, Businesses Abroad in Anti-Corruption Efforts 2026

Prime Minister Rumen Radev said on Wednesday that the authorities are working with partner services to trace businesses, assets, properties and activities abroad as part of ongoing efforts to uncover possible corruption schemes. Radev was speaking to reporters at the Slivnitsa Training Centre, where he attended military capability demonstrations.
His comments came amid scrutiny of Bulgaria’s Ambassador to the UAE Ivan Yordanov. At a government briefing on September 18, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that a shell company which had allegedly paid for private flights taken by MRF leader Delyan Peevski and provided the aircraft was owned by Yordanov’s father. Peevski rejected the allegations as fabricated and said that he and his family had paid for his flights. Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said on Wednesday that an on-site inspection of the embassy would take place in the coming weeks, with a Foreign Ministry team to travel to the UAE.
Radev said investigators were also working to identify proxies allegedly used by the people under scrutiny. “We are doing everything possible to work with partner services and identify businesses, assets, properties and activities abroad. This is slow and difficult, but you can see that we are beginning to make progress. I hope we will soon establish exactly what they have been doing and how substantial public funds passed through them,” Radev said.
Asked whether the proxies were linked mainly to party structures, he replied: “Mostly not.”
Radev confirmed that, while serving as president, he had signed the decree appointing Yordanov as Ambassador to the UAE. He added that, as a rule, checks are not carried out on the fathers of ambassadors sent abroad.
Radev said the previous ambassador’s term had expired by the time he was invited to visit the UAE. Bulgaria planned to hold a major business forum during the visit, but the outgoing ambassador said this could only happen after a personal meeting with the UAE President and the establishment of trust. Yordanov was serving as consul in the UAE at the time and was in Bulgaria when Radev asked him to organize the forum. After Yordanov successfully arranged the event, he was later appointed ambassador, Radev said.
