Foreign Minister Petrova Discusses Connectivity with Georgian, Qatari, UAE, Omani, Iraqi Officials 2026

Strategic connectivity was a key foreign policy focus of Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova’s meetings on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
This foreign policy focus builds on Bulgaria’s ambition to play a more active role in developing European connectivity. The Regional Connectivity Summit that Bulgaria will host in 2027 provides an opportunity to place key infrastructure projects in a broader European framework and turn the vision for connectivity into concrete projects, investments and partnerships.
The development of transport, energy and economic links between Europe, the Black Sea region, the South Caucasus, the Middle East and Asia was the focus of Petrova’s talks with representatives of Georgia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Iraq.
Petrova discussed opportunities to deepen connectivity with Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili and Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi.
She also discussed this matter with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, and Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
Bulgaria’s geographic location is a strategic advantage. It is time to turn it into real transport, energy and economic links, investments and partnerships, Petrova said, as quoted by the Foreign Ministry.
She said changing global trade routes and growing geopolitical competition are making the diversification of transport and energy corridors increasingly important for Europe’s security, resilience and competitiveness.
The talks also addressed the potential to expand economic ties and investment partnerships between Europe and Middle Eastern countries, as well as the role of the Black Sea region and the South Caucasus in the broader connectivity architecture between Europe and Asia.
Connectivity is not just about infrastructure. It is a matter of economic security, competitiveness and strategic resilience, Petrova said.
