European Researchers’ Night in Sofia takes place Friday and Saturday, marking the 19th consecutive year the event is held in Bulgaria, the organizers announced on Friday.
The event runs in front of Sofia’s Regional History Museum, featuring various themed booths that showcase the latest developments in Bulgarian and global science in an engaging way. A poster session will be held at the Triangular Tower of Serdica, where visitors can also immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ancient Serdica using VR technology. A rich programme is also planned for the Lozenets Campus of St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.
At Banski Square, visitors can explore exhibition areas and participate in various creative workshops. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about modern scientific developments from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and see robots, drones, human DNA under a microscope, carnivorous plants, and other fascinating exhibits up close. Themed tours will guide visitors through historic Sofia, while various educational games are planned for children.
The main goal of the “Researchers in the knowledge triangle” (K-TRIO) project is to bring scientists and their work closer to the general public, thereby raising awareness of scientific activities and achievements, as well as their impact on everyday life.
The 2026 European Researchers’ Night will be celebrated across the continent on September 25. It is expected to welcome over 1 million people of all ages into museums, universities and research institutions across 40 countries. This year’s edition coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions programme. Over the past three decades, the programme has supported more than 150,000 researchers at all career stages, from early-stage doctoral candidates to experienced researchers with PhDs and research leaders, and has involved 23 Nobel Prize laureates as fellows, supervisors, or project coordinators.
