The hull of a new ferry which will run across the canal connecting Lake Beloslav with Lake Varna was launched on Friday in the presence of Prime Minister Rumen Radev. The new ferry will replace the current one that links the two parts of the industrial town of Beloslav, situated west of the Black Sea city of Varna.
The event was also attended by Varna Regional Governor Mario Smarkov, Deputy Finance Minister Rositsa Velkova-Zheleva, Commander of the Bulgarian Navy Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov, municipality mayors and senior maritime business executives.
The Prime Minister said in a speech that, amid Bulgaria’s difficult financial situation and the large deficit inherited by the new government, the Finance Ministry has recognized the enormous importance of the new ferry project and the necessary funding for its implementation has been secured.
“This vessel will not simply connect two banks, but families, people and lives,” Radev said, adding that the project is linked to the future of this part of the country and is a clear result of the government’s consistent work with local authorities and Bulgarian business.
Radev noted: “Today we are also solving an interesting mathematical problem, showing that 40 kilometres by land can be equivalent to 250 metres by water.” He specifically congratulated the company building the ferry on constructing such a complex vessel, which requires extensive knowledge, experience, dedication and precision. “The construction of the ferry confirms our maritime identity and the fact that we are a maritime nation,” Radev added.
The Prime Minister stressed that connectivity is a key priority of the government’s policy. He also highlighted that by building the ferry, the government is showing that there should be no difference between people living in Sofia, Varna, Balchik or Beloslav, and that the approach should be the same everywhere, with central government, local authorities and business working in the interests of Bulgarian citizens.
Beloslav Mayor Deyan Ivanov said that one of the stages in the construction of the new ferry was completed on Friday, with its hull being launched. The entire vessel weighs around 300 tonnes, and its superstructure, engines and equipment are yet to be installed. According to Ivanov, the new ferry is scheduled to begin carrying passengers on March 3, 2027. The mayor recalled that the project is worth BGN 24 million (approximately EUR 12 million), with the funding provided entirely by the state. He said the new ferry will have twice the capacity of the current vessel. It will be able to carry 40-42 cars, at a 40% lower operating cost.
Asked by journalists about plans for Bulgaria to acquire a new search-and-rescue vessel, the Prime Minister said this should happen because Bulgaria must guarantee the safety of every form of transport and the security of its exclusive economic zone. “The importance of the Black Sea will continue to grow,” Radev stressed. He said it is a crossroads for transport, energy and optical-fibre corridors. “Bulgaria has a highly active policy within the EU and it is no coincidence that Ursula von der Leyen’s speech mentioned that the high-level conference on security will be held in our country,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the ports of Varna and Burgas are a very important element in this regard.
