Bulgarian customs officers and organized crime police seized 20 kg of cocaine and 26 kg of cannabis worth more than EUR 2.2 million from a truck at the Lesovo border checkpoint between Bulgaria and Turkiye, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
The drugs were found concealed in a specially constructed compartment in one of the truck’s fuel tanks during a joint operation by the Customs Agency and the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC).
The truck, comprising a tractor unit and trailer, was travelling in transit from Western Europe towards Turkiye when it was diverted for inspection at the checkpoint on September 25.
An X-ray inspection detected an unusual density in the truck’s external fuel tank. Customs officers subsequently dismantled and cut open the tank, finding 41 packages inside. Field tests indicated that 24 packages contained cannabis and 17 contained cocaine.
Customs Agency Deputy Director Stefan Bakalov said the drugs had been covered with a specially made lead shielding intended to make their detection more difficult. He put their value for judicial purposes at more than EUR 2.2 million.
GDCOC Deputy Director Darin Kostov said the seizure resulted from investigations into groups involved in trafficking drugs through Bulgaria. Police operations related to the investigation were continuing at addresses across the country.
The truck’s driver, a 40-year-old Bulgarian national, was detained and charged with an offence under Article 242 of the Penal Code, Yambol District Prosecutor Doychin Doychev said. Prosecutors ordered his detention for up to 72 hours and intend to seek his remand in custody.
The offence carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to BGN 200,000.
