GERB-UDF MP Georg Georgiev attended the Monday hearing of Iva Mihaylova’s case concerning a crash near Kocani, North Macedonia, in October 2025. “What we are seeing is the refusal to allow Iva to return to Bulgaria for treatment despite her deteriorating condition,” Georgiev told Bulgarian media. “This has now become a pattern, given that she has already been denied permission to do so several times. This has nothing to do with the criminal proceedings,” he added.
Mihaylova, who is a citizen of both North Macedonia and Bulgaria, has been charged with a serious offence related to road traffic safety in North Macedonia. The accident occurred in early October 2025, leaving several people, including Mihaylova, injured. Her identity documents were confiscated following the accident, preventing her from travelling for treatment to Bulgaria, one of the countries where such treatment is possible given the nature of her spinal injuries.
Georgiev stressed that his presence in Kocani was a continuation of GERB’s long-standing commitment to ensuring Iva’s right to a fair and impartial trial.
“The fact that the authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia are not paying attention to the health of a young person who clearly has neither the intention to abscond nor the intention to evade justice, which we hope the Republic of North Macedonia will provide fairly, demonstrates a different attitude which, unfortunately, we cannot say fully and objectively respects human rights. Everyone has the right to fight for their health and their life; everyone has the right to defend themselves, and we hope that this trial will demonstrate precisely this maturity – objectively upholding what we in democratic societies understand as a fair, open, impartial and transparent process,” the MP stressed.
