A recent appearance by former Vice President Kamala Harris caught the attention of Megyn Kelly, who questioned the former’s “blaccent” while speaking to conservative talk show host Joe Pags.
“What’s with the blaccent?” Kelly asked of Harris, who is Black and South Asian (her father immigrated to the United States from Jamaica, and her mother immigrated from India).
The slang term “blaccent” is commonly defined a portmanteau of “Black” and “accent,” and as “a speaking style used by people who are not Black Americans to mimic, stereotypically, a style of speech associated with some Black Americans,” including “not only inflection, tone, and pronunciation, but also the grammar and vocabulary of African American English, also known as African American Vernacular English or AAVE.” The term “is almost always used disapprovingly,” the Merriam-Webster discussion section adds.
“Honestly, we’ve heard her talk a million times and she doesn’t talk like that,” Kelly added.
She continued:
Who does she think she’s fooling? She’s such a fraud. And … her Black, we all know the barber shop didn’t even believe she was Black, right? Those Black guys during the campaign were like, “She’s not Black, she’s Indian.” That’s the part of her heritage she’s always leaned into.
Harris, Kelly added, was “playing it up because she’s in front of the NAACP.”
In a handful of minutes, as she is wont to do, Kelly managed to offer racist commentary and trot out tropes that she has no business exploring. She’s also wrong.
Republicans and conservatives have questioned Harris’ ethnicity and racial identity for years. In 2024, then-candidate Donald Trump told National Association of Black Journalists convention attendees of Harris, then his opponent in the presidential race, “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was always only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black.”
He added,”So, I don’t know. Is she Indian or is she Black?”
In 2019, Charlamagne Tha God asked Harris during an interview on The Breakfast Club about some views that she isn’t African American because her parents are immigrants.
Harris answered,”So I was born in Oakland and raised in the United States except for the years that I was in high school in Montreal, Canada. And, look, this is the same thing they did to Barack [Obama]. This is not new to us. And so, I think that we know what they are trying to do.”
Harris also went to college at HBCU Howard University and wrote in her 2019 autobiography, The Truths We Hold, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters. She knew that her adopted homeland would see Maya and me as black girls, and she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women.”
As for Kelly, this is hardly the first time she’s expressed racist commentary on her show or elsewhere. In 2018 she was forced to apologize after she said defended blackface. “Back when I was a kid, that was okay just as long as you were dressing as a character,” she insisted. Kelly was born in 1970.
She later said, “The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.”
In the same year, USA Today’s Kirsten Powers revealed she’d previously clashed with Kelly over the latter’s decision to refer to former First Lady Michelle Obama as “Obama’s Baby Mama.” Kelly has also previously insisted the fictional character Santa Claus is white.
“Kelly asserted that the black community suffered from a “thug mentality” where ‘it’s cool to sort of hate the cops, and hang out — and be somebody who doesn’t necessarily prize being there for your family,’” Powers also wrote. “When first lady Michelle Obama talked about the toll of discrimination against black people in a commencement speech, Kelly argued that her speech played into a ‘culture of victimization.’”
Kelly was eviscerated from all political angles in June of this year after she said in part, “I’m just, I’m thinking about our friends in Ohio. Who’ve been dealing with these TPS Haitians for years now, who are drunk driving all over their towns and killing people. This is the whole cats and dogs thing. Like they don’t want to live like Americans live. And this was supposed to be a temporary, it was supposed be temporary help.”
“When I was hanging out on white nationalist blogs circa 2010, there was a taboo on being this explicitly racist,” wrote right-wing commentator Richard Hanania in response.
