Forty-seven percent of Bulgarians are indifferent to food waste, placing the country among the European Union countries with the highest share of such behavior, it was revealed at an international conference, titled “Food for Tomorrow: Solutions for People and the Planet,” held at the Sofia University Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. The event is organized by the Bulgarian Food Bank as part of the FoodCLIC project, funded by the European Union.
During the conference, it was also noted that thousands of households in Bulgaria live in conditions of food insecurity, while edible food products continue to be lost throughout the food supply chain. It was emphasized that by 2030, a 10% reduction in food waste in production and processing must be achieved, and that cooperation, partnerships, policies and practical solutions are needed to meet this target.
The conference also highlighted that around one-third of the food produced worldwide never reaches the table, with more than 13% being lost after harvesting, while a further 19% is wasted along the supply chain after processing, including in retail, food services and households. More than 720 million people worldwide suffer from hunger every day, while more than 2.5 billion people cannot regularly afford nutritious and healthy food.
Food loss and waste also have a significant climate impact: around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to discarded and lost food. Nearly 1.5 billion hectares of land are used to produce this food, while water, energy and human labor are also wasted in the process.
