GERB leader Boyko Borissov welcomed efforts to bring Tsar Samuel’s remains to Bulgaria but said on Tuesday that it must be clear what the country would give in exchange.
He made the remarks to journalists in Stara Zagora while meeting members of the local GERB organization.
“I have held negotiations about them, first when Kostas Karamanlis was prime minister, and later with Antonis Samaras, Alexis Tsipras and Kyriakos Mitsotakis,” Borissov said.
Borissov said the talks had always hinged on what Bulgaria would offer in exchange. His first government had set up a commission to assess the options, he added.
Borissov welcomed the prospect of bringing the remains to Bulgaria but questioned what the country would give in return. “I congratulate them if they can bring the remains here, but I still want to know what we will give in return. That is precisely what nobody knows,” he said. “It may not be to Bulgaria’s advantage, but it should be fair.”
Borissov said the Greek side had rejected several proposals raised in earlier negotiations as insufficient. “Let whoever made the decision explain it,” he added.
