“Democratic Bulgaria” will file a report with the National Revenue Agency (NRA) concerning the property holdings of former acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-leader of Yes, Bulgaria and an MP from the Democratic Bulgaria (DB) Parliamentary Group, told reporters in Parliament here on Wednesday.
According to Bozhanov, a number of publications by BIRD and other media outlets have revealed that a considerable number of properties are linked to Sarafov and his family. There have also been reports of people from his family being fictitiously employed by certain companies at high salaries, Bozhanov said, adding that all of this is documented in the detailed report they are submitting to the NRA so that it can investigate the source of Sarafov’s funds.
“The pre-trial investigation into the matter was terminated, but we believe the NRA should examine it in order to investigate and put an end to the mechanisms through which the judiciary is being abused,” Bozhanov added.
DB MP Ivaylo Mirchev also said that his Parliamentary Group had submitted amendments to the Wine and Spirit Drinks Act. “In recent days it has become clear that the Finance Minister wants people to be unable to give each other homemade rakia as a gift,” Mirchev said. Under the proposed amendments, people would have greater freedom and would be able to produce and sell such products when they are in small quantities and have a certificate of origin, Mirchev explained.
Asked about the murder of Plovdiv businessman Ilian Filipov, Mirchev said there was a clear indication, “since there was a conflict between the owner of PIMK [Filipov] and [businessman] Mr. [Ivan] Petleshkov.” This line of inquiry should be carefully analyzed, he said, adding that at the same time there are also indications of possible involvement in drug trafficking and all the actions stemming from this by various individuals from the shadow economy.
