The fifth training programme for young journalists, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) in partnership with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Bulgaria, began on Wednesday. Taking place at BTA’s MaxiM Hall through October 2, the training brings together 15 young journalists from various Bulgarian media outlets to learn about the functioning of EU institutions, with a focus on the European Parliament, European policies, and their implementation in Member States.
“Your decision to invest time in this training is very important both for you and for the media and journalism as a whole,“ BTA Deputy Director General Evgenia Drumeva said at the opening of the training, noting that over the past years the programme has trained a total of 48 journalists from 13 Bulgarian media outlets. She added that a journalist’s thorough preparation in advance is a prerequisite for the successful fulfilment of their duties.
“The European topic is not a foreign policy issue. It is our topic, and it is time to grow up and accept EU topics as our own, not as external to our country,” Biliana Tzarnoretchka, press officer at the European Parliament Liaison Office in Bulgaria, said at the opening, underlining the importance of communicating the work of European institutions for Bulgaria’s full participation within the EU.
The programme is divided into two modules – national and European. The national module will present general knowledge about the competences of European institutions, legislation, and policies. The European module will take place in Brussels in 2027, with participants selected based on their successful completion of practical exercises.
This year’s lecturers in the programme include leading academics and experts in European policies and issues, among them Ingrid Shikova and Ralitsa Kovacheva from Sofia University, Ivan Nachev from New Bulgarian University, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov, as well as practicing journalists and representatives of the European Parliament.
