Armed Forces Capabilities Demonstration Day, the Thracian Winner school tournament and a stage of the State Military Functional Fitness Championship took place on Thursday at the Artileriiski Park in Stara Zagora, Southern Bulgaria. The organizers were the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Staff and the National Military Sports Federation with the assistance of the Stara Zagora Municipality.
Among the official guests were the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Dr. Eng. Senya Terzieva-Zhelyazkova, the Commander of the Land Forces, Major General Deyan Deshkov, commanders and representatives of the Armed Forces, as well as representatives of local and state authorities.
The official opening of the events was given by Deputy Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Krasimir Kanev. In his welcome address, he said that the event gives citizens the opportunity to see some of the military equipment, observe demonstrations and learn about sports in the Armed Forces. “This holiday will continue the true connection between the army, education, sports and the community,” said Kanev. According to him, sports and military-applied activities show how qualities such as discipline, responsibility, honor and patriotism are cultivated.
Deputy Minister of Defence Lyubomir Monov pointed out that the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Staff and the National Military Sports Federation are organizing the events with the belief that Bulgarian society should have more opportunities to experience the Bulgarian Army in person. According to him, this is the second such event after the sports festival of military formations held at the Plovdiv Stadium in 2025.
Monov also welcomed the students participating in the “Thracian Winner” tournament, which he said was an opportunity to showcase their physical and spiritual skills. He pointed out that the events are part of efforts to encourage interest in pursuing higher military education and to promote the professional opportunities offered by the Bulgarian Army. Over 20 student teams from Stara Zagora, Nova Zagora, Plovdiv, Vratsa, Pleven, Montana, Svilengrad, Gabrovo, Shumen, Targovishte and Gorna Oryahovitsa competed in various military-style games.
The event featured demonstrations of the capabilities of the Land Forces, Air Force, Joint Special Operations Command and Military Police Service. The program included a flyover by two Su-25 aircraft, a display of explosive device disposal and tactical shooting, a demonstration of actions to neutralize intruders and capabilities to capture terrorists.
Visitors could talk to active duty personnel and receive information about the opportunities for career development in the Bulgarian Army. Representatives of the National Military University, the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy present the specialties and the conditions for admission and training.
