Oncologists Say Bulgaria’s Cancer Registry and National Anti-Cancer Plan Don’t Work 2026

Bulgaria’s cancer registry is not operational and the national anti-cancer plan is not being implemented, oncologists told journalists ahead of the 17th National Oncology Conference MORE 2026, which opens in Sofia on Thursday and runs until October 4. The forum is organized by the Bulgarian Joint Cancer Network (BJCN).
At the conference, Bulgarian oncologists, radiation therapists and pharmacologists will present the latest systemic treatment approaches, clinical results and radiotherapy for unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.
The lack of a cancer registry means there are no accurate nationwide data and prevents the adoption of adequate prevention policies, the doctors said. According to them, the data entered into the National Health Information System are insufficient to support the development of appropriate policies.
The new cancer registry has been completed and meets European requirements, but has not yet gone live, said Ivo Petrov, a pharmacist and coordinator of the processes for establishing the National Cancer Mission Hub – Bulgaria (NCMH) and a member of SONM’s governing board.
The Bulgarian National Cancer Mission Hub is a non-governmental initiative aimed at organising the implementation of the European and national anti-cancer plans, said Associate Professor Dimitar Kalev, chairman of the Organizing Committee of MORE 2026 and vice-president of BJCN. He said the National Hub was awaiting institutionalization so that it could begin operating in Bulgaria.
“We have had 204 days of silence from the institutions regarding their participation in the Bulgarian National Hub,” Petrov said. He described the neglect of the issue of cancer as “most immoral” and said the hub was awaiting responses from the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.
Seventeen hubs in other European countries are currently on the way to being institutionalized, Petrov said. These hubs bring together people with the experience and capacity to translate policy into practical implementation.
Prevention, screening and health literacy are the main pillars set out by the European Commission under the Mission on Cancer, Kalev said, adding that these pillars were lacking in Bulgaria. He described Bulgarian oncology as a “cone with feet of clay”.
