President Iliana Iotova welcomed participants and creators of the Bench of Generations initiative to the President’s Administration building on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, which is observed on October 1, the President’s press secretariat said on Thursday. “The way we treat older persons is not only a matter of care and social support, but also of human dignity. Everyone carries with them professional and life experience, memories, stories, and wisdom that shape the collective memory of our society. That is why it is important to create opportunities every day for communication, mutual understanding, and closeness between generations,” Iotova said.
The project originated at a senior centre in the town of Kameno, based on an idea by the Faithful Guardian Association, and the installation has already been displayed at several locations in Burgas and the surrounding area. The Bench of Generations is now in front of the President’s Administration building. Its purpose is to encourage people of different ages to interact and maintain a connection with one another.
“Initiatives like this are very valuable because they bring generations together. This gives us the opportunity to draw wisdom from one another, to gather the wealth of experience in our hands so that we can pass it on to our children and grandchildren,” Iotova said. She expressed hope that while the bench is in Sofia, people of different ages will share their dreams and memories with one another, the press secretariat’s statement added.
“Bulgaria’s older generation built the homeland we have today, and we will never overlook or forget that,” Iotova said. She noted that the connection between generations is particularly important today, when people are increasingly isolating themselves from one another and even children are losing touch with the most natural thing, playing and sharing.
The Bench of Generations will be on display in front of the President’s Administration building, with the cooperation of the Sofia Municipality, until October 6.
