Nuclear power is a strategic choice for Bulgaria’s energy security, competitiveness and future, Energy Minister Iva Petrova said on Thursday as she opened a two-day international nuclear conference and exhibition in Sofia. The event is organized by the Bulgarian Energy and Mining Forum under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy.
According to Petrova, decarbonisation and growing electricity demand have shifted the question from whether nuclear energy should be developed to how this can be done in the safest and most economically sustainable way. Bulgaria has a strong foundation on which to build, she said, highlighting the country’s more than five decades of experience in operating nuclear power facilities, its established professional community and its pool of expertise.
She emphasized that nuclear energy will remain one of the main pillars of Bulgaria’s national energy security. Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant plays a key role in the country’s electricity system, and the construction of Units 7 and 8 at the plant is a specific government priority. Petrova added that the project was of strategic importance not only for Bulgaria’s energy sector but also for its economy.
At the same time, Bulgaria is monitoring developments in small modular reactors. These technologies would mean not only additional generating capacity but also investment, technological advancement, industrial development and new opportunities for Bulgarian businesses, she said.
According to Petrova, new nuclear capacity is important not only for Bulgaria but also for the stability of the electricity system across Southeastern Europe, a region that needs reliable low-carbon power.
The government’s aim is to ensure that as much of the added value as possible remains within the Bulgarian economy and that Bulgarian companies play an active role in supply chains, the Minister said. Nuclear energy, she noted, encompasses much more than an industrial sector: it also involves technology, science, education, regulation and people.
Petrova said achieving these objectives would require strong partnerships between the state and businesses, as well as between the scientific community and industry.
Every new technology must be assessed in terms of safety, economic viability and the actual needs of the electricity system, she stressed.
She assured participants that Bulgaria aspired to play an active role in the development of new nuclear technologies.
