National Assembly Chair Michaela Dotsova described State Agency for Child Protection staff as Bulgaria’s unsung heroes on the agency’s 25th anniversary, Parliament’s press service said on Thursday.
She said their work was measured by the number of smiles they brought, rather than the number of reports they wrote.
Dotsova added that the daily efforts of the agency’s staff sometimes took the place of a mother’s love.
The anniversary was more than an institutional celebration, she said. For people with heart, mind and soul, it represented 25 years of care for Bulgaria’s children.
The maturity of any developed society could be judged by two things: how it treated older people and how it cared for children, Dotsova said. She added that agency staff used sound judgement and rational thinking to identify the best way to support the development of children at risk.
The agency’s campaigns showed how the problems facing children were evolving and prompted the development of government policies to protect their rights and provide them with better care, Dotsova added.
Dotsova pledged that Parliament would consider every constructive idea so that better policies for Bulgarian children could be achieved through joint efforts.
The State Agency for Child Protection is developing an information system designed to bring together information from reports, regardless of which child protection authority submitted them or whether they were later withdrawn. The system is intended to enable much faster responses in future to indications of violence among or against children, Minister of Labour and Social Policy Nataliya Efremova said in September.
