Bulgaria will receive the mortal remains of Tsar Samuel at a state ceremony on Saturday at Knyaz Alexander I Square in Sofia, , the Government Information Service said on Friday. Prime Minister Rumen Radev will deliver an address at the ceremony, entitled “Bulgaria Welcomes Tsar Samuel”.
“More than 1,000 years after his death, Tsar Samuel (997-1014) is returning home – to Bulgaria, to whose freedom and independence he devoted his life. The mortal remains of one of Bulgaria’s most renowned medieval rulers will be handed over to the Bulgarian State on October 3 at an official ceremony at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, in the presence of Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis,” the statement said.
After entering Bulgarian airspace, the Spartan military transport aircraft carrying Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains will be intercepted and escorted by two pairs of MiG-29 and F-16 fighter jets. The formation will fly over Knyaz Alexander I Square at around 12:30 p.m. The fighter jets will fly over the square again after the Spartan transport aircraft has landed. The Bulgarian Armed Forces will transport Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains from Vasil Levski Airport Sofia to Knyaz Alexander I Square.
As part of the state ceremony “Bulgaria Welcomes Tsar Samuel”, Prime Minister Rumen Radev will deliver an address. Twenty-one artillery salutes will be fired during the playing of the Bulgarian national anthem. The ceremony will continue with a procession to St Sofia Church, where members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects to Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains and a trisagion service will be held.
Around 750 Interior Ministry employees will be involved in providing security and maintaining public order during the state ceremony for the reception and interment of Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains in Sofia on October 3, Chief Inspector Ivan Georgiev, head of the Mass Events Sector at the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, told reporters on Thursday in connection with the security measures being taken.
