Athens is fulfilling its historic duty by returning to Sofia the mortal remains of Tsar Samuel from the four sarcophagi discovered in 1964 by Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos at the Basilica of St Achillius, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during the ceremony at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki marking the handover of Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains to Bulgaria on Saturday.
“Forty-eight relics of enormous significance to the spiritual and emotional life of our country are returning to Greece – icons, crosses, church vessels and even an episcopal throne. These are relics acquired during the First World War from the Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita, as well as from the Monastery of St John the Baptist and the Monastery of Panagia Eikosifinissa,” Mitsotakis said.
He stressed that after being displayed at the museum in Thessaloniki, the relics would be returned to their places of origin.
Saturday’s ceremony in Thessaloniki is part of an agreement between Bulgaria and Greece, under which Athens is handing over to Sofia the mortal remains identified as belonging to Tsar Samuel, while Bulgaria, in turn, is handing over 48 church relics to Greece. Samuel’s remains were discovered in 1965 at the Basilica of St Achillius on Lake Prespa by Greek archaeologist Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos.
