Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the delegation he is leading have arrived in Thessaloniki on Saturday for the ceremony marking the handover of the mortal remains of Bulgarian Tsar Samuel.
The delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov and Culture Minister Evtim Miloshev. The Greek side will be represented by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. Representatives of the academic community are also expected to attend the ceremony, including Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Radev is expected to arrive at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki at around 10:30 a.m. local time, where he and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis will make joint statements. The official ceremony for the handover of the remains and the exchange of handover protocols will then begin. It will be attended by the Culture Ministers of Bulgaria and Greece, Evtim Miloshev and Lina Mendoni. The Greek Culture Ministry confirmed that the protocols will be signed at the museum in the presence of the two countries’ prime ministers.
The agreement between Sofia and Athens provides for Greece to hand over to Bulgaria the remains identified as belonging to Tsar Samuel (997-1014), discovered at the Basilica of St Achillius on Lake Prespa by Greek archaeologist Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos. Bulgaria, in turn, will hand over 48 church relics to Greece.
Following the ceremony, Tsar Samuel’s mortal remains will be transported to Sofia aboard a Spartan military transport aircraft. After entering Bulgarian airspace, the aircraft will be escorted by MiG-29 and F-16 fighter jets and is expected to land at Vasil Levski Airport at around 12:40 p.m.
A state ceremony to receive the remains is scheduled to take place at Knyaz Alexander I Square in Sofia at 1:20 p.m. The mortal remains will then be carried in a procession to the Basilica of St Sofia, where they are to be placed in a specially prepared sarcophagus and a memorial service will be held.
