During the solemn ceremony of receiving the mortal remains of Tsar Samuel on Saturday, Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Daniil said that it is with reverence and filial honour that Bulgaria welcomes the sarcophagus containing the mortal remains of one of the greatest and most worthy rulers of the Bulgarian people. Daniil led the funeral service prior to the laying of the ruler’s mortal remains in the sarcophagus at St Sophia Basilica.
The Patriarch said: “Today, more than a millennium after his life and historic feat, Tsar Samuel returns to his people to remain in Bulgaria forever and to rest in this house of God.” He shared a legend, according to which, Samuel was baptized in St Sophia and attended this church as a young man.
Daniil described Samuel’s remains as a sacred relic of Bulgaria’s national, ecclesiastical and ethnic memory. He called for an appreciation of the significance of the ruler’s return to his homeland, to which he had devoted his strength and his life.
The Patriarch expressed his gratitude to the Greek architect, archaeologist and Byzantinist Prof. Nikolaos Moutsopoulos who was the first to identify the remains of Tsar Samuel and publicly announce their discovery in 1969. He said that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will offer prayers for Moutsopoulos. The Patriarch also thanked the museum staff and specialists who had cared for the remains since their discovery, as well as the diplomatic and political representatives of Bulgaria and Greece who were involved in reaching the agreement for the return.
Daniil stated that this event is an exceptional step towards strengthening relations, understanding and friendship between the two neighbouring countries and sister Orthodox Churches of Bulgaria and Greece.
At the end of his address, Daniil called for the eternal and blessed memory of Tsar Samuel and offered a prayer that God might grant light, peace and eternal rest to His faithful servant Samuel – Tsar of Bulgaria.
A procession accompanied Samuel’s remains to the church. The marble sarcophagus, weighing approximately 2.5 tonnes, was placed in the southern part of the transept of the basilica.
