Bulgaria needs a new kind of president who tells the truth and holds the executive to account, presidential candidate Ivan Hristanov told a campaign meeting in Pleven on Saturday.
Hristanov said Bulgaria needed a fighter as president because the battle against corruption and oligarchic power had not even begun. Such a president should provide a strong, courageous and decisive check on Parliament, speaking out against legislation harmful to the Bulgarian people’s interests and vetoing it. Everyone in Bulgaria should know that such a veto represented the Bulgarian people, rather than the party that had backed the president, financed him and run his campaign, he added.
If elected, he would convene a national roundtable entitled The Bulgarian Dream, bringing together scientists, farmers, entrepreneurs, teachers and other representatives of Bulgarian society to set the country’s overall direction.
Hristanov said removing the post of Prosecutor General from the Constitution would be one of his first tasks if elected. He also called for two new constitutional provisions: one enshrining freedom from corruption and another guaranteeing people clean water, clean air and an unpolluted natural environment.
Vice-presidential candidate Stoyanka Cherkezova discussed the country’s demographic problems and said she was ready to organize a roundtable on the issue.
The meeting continued with questions from members of the public.
