Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released a fiery video on the government shutdown being a “life or death” fight with Republicans on Tuesday night.
In a video posted to his social media on day eight of the partial federal shutdown, Schumer vowed there is “no f**king way” Democrats are budging on their healthcare asks. Democrats are seeking an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies, warning millions of Americans will see massive spikes in their health insurance costs when they expire next year. Republicans, meanwhile, have accused Democrats of fighting for health insurance for illegal immigrants and of playing politics in the funding fight.
Schumer said:
So now we’re in a government shutdown. And you may be asking yourself, how the hell did we get here? Donald Trump and the Republican Party are hell-bent on taking health care away from 60 million people, closing community clinics, rural hospitals, nursing homes, all so they can keep giving tax breaks to their billionaire friends. It’s a disgrace. So Democrats have three words for this. No f**king way. It’s literally life or death, we will not let Republicans blow up our healthcare system.
Schumer noted past attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act by Republicans.
“If Republicans are consistent about anything, it’s about taking away health care from as many of you as possible,” he said.
Schumer then showed footage of multiple doctors arguing that losing the ACA subsidies will not only increase insurance costs, but also overwhelm hospitals’ emergency rooms.
“The bottom line, Donald Trump and the Republicans have chosen to shut down the government rather than work with us to defuse the ticking time bomb that will blow up healthcare for millions of Americans. Congressional Democrats are on the side of the American people, and together we will fight to make this right,” Schumer said.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) blasted Schumer over the shutdown, claiming Democrats are “cheating” voters and simply opposing President Donald Trump for political purposes.
“They hate Donald Trump!” he said. “They have Trump Derangement Syndrome! It’s very real!”
