Crockett joined Kat Vargas on the Taco Policy Podcast this week and touched on a number of topics, including her work campaigning for Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Harris recently authored a best-selling book 107 Days on her short presidential campaign after former President Joe Biden dropped his candidacy.

“When it came down to the presidential, I told the team, I said, ‘Stop sending me to all the urban centers. Yes, I can do that, yes, but you’ve got plenty of surrogates that can go do that. You need to send me to rural America.’ And they were looking like, ‘Huh?’” Crockett recalled.

The congresswoman argued she would have been far more beneficial speaking in rural areas with her Texas background.

“I’m like, ‘listen, I was in East Texas. I live there. I know the struggles. I know what it’s like when the paper mill is threatened with shutting down or Cooper Tire may shut down. I know and the angst. I know how these small-town economies work.’ I get it because I lived it. I still have property out there. I’m like, ‘Just try me. Like, trust me on this,” she said.

Crockett added that “towards the end” of the campaign, Harris’s team agreed with more of a focus on rural America, but by the time they came around, Crockett no longer had the availability she did before.

“I’m like, ‘well, I don’t have enough time now,’” she said. “Because you’re not flying into the airport to get to this small town. I mean, you gotta drive, you gotta, you know, do some other things. And I think we’ve got to engage in real conversations, but I shouldn’t change who I am because I am right on this.”
