Bulgarian chilli-eating champion Nikolay “Papaworm” Filipov won the League of Fire world title after defeating three-time world champion Stephen “Fiery Redd” Kurgan in a title bout held in Sofia on October 3. The contest took place before an audience at Sofia Chilli Fest 2026 held October 3-4, and lasted one hour and 38 minutes, organizers Chilli Hills said on their website.
The two competitors went through 14 rounds, eating more than 76 competition peppers each, with the peppers exceeding 1.5 million Scoville heat units. Two rounds featured specially prepared sauces exceeding 6 million Scoville heat units.
The title was decided in the first speed round, with Filipov taking the win and the League of Fire world championship belt.
Filipov is a two-time Sofia League of Fire belt champion, having won the title in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, he also set a world record for the fastest eating of 25 Carolina Reaper peppers, completing the challenge in 4 minutes and 32 seconds and improving the previous record of 4 minutes and 36.26 seconds.
Kurgan came to Bulgaria as the reigning three-time League of Fire world champion. Days before the title bout, he set a Guinness World Records record by eating 50 Ghost Pepper chillies in under five minutes, improving the previous record held by Canadian Mike Jack, Chilli Hills said.
