President Donald Trump has signed off on a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to execute convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced Monday.

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted of killing 13 people and attempting to kill 32 others in the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. He opened fire inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where troops were preparing for deployment, and was sentenced to death in 2013.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the attack.
The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come.

Back in April, then-acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the Justice Department was expanding the methods available for carrying out federal executions, including firing squads, electrocution, and gas asphyxiation.
Trump resumed federal executions during the final months of his first administration following a roughly two-decade hiatus. Thirteen federal prisoners were executed before former President Joe Biden’s administration moved to impose a moratorium on federal executions.
Hasan’s case, however, falls under the military justice system rather than the civilian federal death penalty process.

Should Hasan ultimately face a firing squad, he would be the first Army prisoner put to death that way in more than 80 years. The last was Pvt. Eddie D. Slovik, who was shot by an Army firing squad in France in January 1945 after being convicted of desertion during World War II.
The U.S. military has not carried out any executions since 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was hanged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Bennett had been convicted of raping and attempting to murder a young girl.
