Kozloduy NPP Reduces Unit 6 Output for First Time over Low Danube Levels

Taking effect on Tuesday, Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is reducing output once again due to the continued fall in the level of the Danube, with the precautionary measure now being applied to Unit 6 for the first time. The output from both units will be reduced by about 90 MW each, or nearly 180 MW in total, the Energy Ministry and the NPP said.
The measure was ordered by the working group overseeing activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the nuclear units during prolonged low river levels. This is the latest precautionary output reduction at Kozloduy NPP due to low Danube levels.
On August 21, Unit 5 reduced output by about 120 MW, in what the Energy Ministry said was the first such case in the plant’s 52-year operating history due to extreme hydrological conditions. Output from Unit 5 began to be gradually increased on August 31, but was reduced again by about 60 MW on September 14 as river levels continued to fall. At that time, Unit 6 continued to operate according to the electricity production schedule.
The measure now applies to both operating units. Forecasts point to a further decline in the Danube level, which could require additional measures under established procedures.
All actions at Kozloduy NPP are taken in line with hydrological conditions and coordinated with the Energy Ministry and Electricity System Operator, the Ministry said.
