Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov is among the favourites for 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said on Wednesday.
The winner will be officially announced in Stockholm on Thursday.
Georgi Gospodinov is one of the most successful contemporary Bulgarian writers. His popularity abroad received a major boost after he won the 2023 International Booker Prize for his novel Time Shelter, translated by Angela Rodel – his third one published in English. According to TheBookerPrizes.com, Gospodinov’s works have been translated to acclaim in 25 languages.
The other writers named by the newspaper are Gerald Murnane of Australia, Gabriela Adamesteanu of Romania, Aka Morchiladze of Georgia, Michel Houellebecq of France, Colm Toibin of Ireland and Hoda Barakat of Lebanon.
National Book Centre Director Svetlozar Zhelev told BTA that Gospodinov is not only a potential Nobel Prize in Literature laureate but “it is only a matter of time before he wins”. Zhelev said the fact that a Bulgarian author is being mentioned by a major newspaper such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung is already a significant achievement. He noted that Nobel Prize nominations are confidential and that, unlike many other literary awards, there is no publicly announced longlist or shortlist.
Zhelev also pointed to Gospodinov’s strong reception in Sweden. He said Swedish publisher Ola Wallin of Ersatz told him that Gospodinov’s books were selling well and receiving excellent reviews in major Swedish media. Wallin is the co-founder of Ersatz, which publishes Gospodinov in Sweden.
The National Book Centre Director said Time Shelter, Death and the Gardener and the recently published Swedish edition of The Physics of Sorrow had strengthened Gospodinov’s standing there. He described the Bulgarian writer as an author whose work speaks to readers worldwide and said its universality was particularly important for international recognition.
