Russia’s War against Ukraine Has Led to Significant Deterioration in Black Sea Security Environment – President Iotova 2026

Bulgaria’s President Iliana Iotova Wednesday said that Russia’s war against Ukraine has led to a significant deterioration in the security environment in the Black Sea region. She spoke after a meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security, which discussed “Current risks and threats to Bulgaria’s maritime security and critical infrastructure in the context of the war in Ukraine.”
Iotova said that ”the meeting noted the escalation of hostilities in the conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, which poses a threat to maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Black Sea region.”
There has been a growing number of attacks by sea and air drones against merchant vessels, resulting in damage to and sinking of ships and loss of life, the President said. She added that this had led to restrictions on freedom of navigation, a sharp decline in maritime traffic, higher insurance costs, economic losses and the risk of environmental pollution.
During the meeting, it was agreed that the increasing use of more numerous, more technologically advanced and longer-range unmanned systems has significantly increased the threats to Bulgaria’s critical infrastructure.
It was noted that Bulgaria faces serious challenges in ensuring the protection of its critical infrastructure. The current risks and threats to maritime security and critical infrastructure are a direct consequence of the lack of prospects for a diplomatic settlement of the military conflict in Ukraine, Iotova said.
The meeting lasted about five hours. It was convened after two merchant vessels were attacked by sea and air drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
