No Common Decision Reached on President’s Proposed Statement on Black Sea Drone Strikes, Vazrazhdane Chair Says 2026

Speaking to reporters following Wednesday’s meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security, held after two vessels in the Black Sea were hit by drones about 70 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast, Vazrazhdane Chair Kostadin Kostadinov said there was a proposed statement from the presidential institution which he cannot support because it contains many things that raise more questions than they answer.
He said that throughout Iotova’s proposed statement, which had been put forward for discussion but on which no common decision had been reached at that point, the focus was on the consequences rather than the causes of the incident that had prompted the CCNS meeting.
Kostadinov voiced concern that the conflict would intensify and that there would be other similar incidents, saying that this concern had also been confirmed by other participants in the Council.
He explained the document proposed by the President said that Bulgaria should actively participate in the process of achieving peace. Kostadinov questioned how this could be achieved when Bulgaria was participating in discussions on the European Union’s new package of sanctions against Russia.
He also said that it was not currently known what type of drones had hit the vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. Kostadinov said Bulgarian services had requested information from their Ukrainian counterparts but had yet to receive a response.
Kostadinov said there had been unanimity among GERB, Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Continue the Change (CC) and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) during the council meeting.
He added that there had also been a proposal to request that a diplomatic note be sent to Russia urging it not to carry out military or other hostile actions in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.
