Stephen A. Smith was called out by one of his colleagues live on air Wednesday for his comments about the sudden retirement of Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson.

Johnson, 36, stunned the football world Wednesday when he announced his immediate retirement from the NFL. Coming into the season, he indicated that the 2026-27 campaign would likely be his last, citing his desire to spend more time with his family.

In his announcement, Johnson noted he was prioritizing his mental health with his decision to step away from the game mid-season.

Reacting to the news on First Take, Smith argued that the Eagles’ recent struggles played a part in Johnson’s decision to retire, saying:

Now he calls it quits — not for a season, not an offseason, oh no, no, no, no, no. After being subjected to this, he said, “Life is a little bit too short. I need to focus.” What did he say? His mental health. Am I making it up? Am I making it up? Did he say that?… So the brother, four games into the 2026 season, a dude that has been in the league forever, sits back and says, “I need to focus on my mental health.” And as an offensive tackle, lord, you know it’s bad!

There’s no way you’re undefeated, you’re winning football games, you’re thriving, everybody’s got Super Bowl in their sights, [and] you walk away. You walk away because it’s a very, very, very bad situation and it doesn’t look to be getting any better, and this brother says, “Hey, my life matters. It’s time. I’m gonna call it quits. My mental health, my mental.” Lord, that’s trouble for the Philadelphia Eagles, and everybody in the city of brotherly love knows it.

ESPN reporter Kimberley Martin, on the other hand, did not view it as a joking matter.

“Agreed,” she said in reference to Johnson’s retirement being troublesome for the Eagles. “Lane had contemplated retirement for a while, right? So I’m not surprised. I feel like you’re making light of the situation. Like, oh, playing this team has set him and said, ‘Oh, I can’t do this anymore.’”

Later on in the show, Smith explained that he was not making light of Johnson’s mental health struggles. In his explanation, Smith doubled down on the points he made previously.
