The president should unite people rather than draw red lines or divide them, Presidential Candidate Ivaylo Simeonov said at a public discussion with citizens on Thursday.
He said the president should not exploit political parties’ weaknesses for personal gain, but should find a way to work with everyone at and around the table, make no excuses and act as a unifying figure.
On coordination between the presidency and the legislature, Simeonov said people had been told that the presidency lacked powers, but it offered a platform to shape processes, expose their weaknesses and shed light on opaque aspects of public life. This was enough to restore public faith in politics, he said. Vice-Presidential Candidate Kosyo Stoychev added that the president could serve as a guarantor of dialogue.
On security and defence, Simeonov said the main problem was that Bulgaria was unprepared, because threats to people began before a bomb or drone struck. The presidency could prompt action to improve preparedness and equip the country with modern technology. He added that the priority was for Bulgaria to be a predictable partner to the EU, NATO and the UN, which he described as the country’s family.
In response to a question, Stoychev said a better Bulgaria was a fiction, yet it was here and now, because people had youth, energy and resources. It was up to them to speak of a Bulgaria of opportunities. Simeonov added that this meant a Bulgaria where people felt no envy and were happy for others.
