Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev said at an international energy conference here on Thursday that Bulgaria should not be on the periphery of the European Union but at its heart, strongly integrated into all European projects, particularly those involving energy connectivity.
According to Poulev, this can be achieved through better connectivity, increased investment, including public-private partnerships in cross-border infrastructure, and greater diversification of supplies.
The forum titled “Energy Alliance in Central and Eastern Europe: Central and Eastern Europe Together for a Competitive and Secure Energy Future” was organized by the Bulgarian Petroleum and Gas Association under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy.
“We support the green transition and all green policies, but they must be implemented in a way that does not further undermine Europe’s competitiveness. They must not lead to additional price pressures and must take into account the needs of individual countries,” the Deputy Prime Minister said at the conference.
Poulev expressed confidence that Bulgaria, through open dialogue and stronger integration with its Central and Eastern European economic partners, will have an even stronger voice and will defend the needs of industry and consumers.
He said that these unprecedented times of economic transformation are marked by geopolitical processes reshaping the global energy, economic and industrial landscape. “We know that every bomb and every missile that falls in Ukraine and Iran is felt by every household, every family and every business and industry, in the form of disrupted supplies, price shocks, inflation and loss of competitiveness,” he said.
He noted that the government faced the difficult task of seeking local solutions to global problems and that this was being done in a spirit of partnership and dialogue with the sector and leading experts.
The Economy Minister recalled a number of anticipatory measures developed by the government targeting different segments of the Bulgarian population. According to him, these measures also provide substantial support to industry and small and medium-sized businesses. Another key priority is effective administrative reform.
Poulev highlighted two more initiatives. The first was lifting the ban on diesel fuel exports without causing shortages for the Bulgarian economy and energy system. This has injected additional liquidity not only into Lukoil Neftohim Burgas but into industry as a whole, the minister said.
A longer-term initiative, according to Poulev, involves developing legislation on public-private partnerships. “We face the huge challenge of finding the necessary resources, given the suboptimal state of public finances, and mobilizing private capital combined with the smart use of EU funds in order to comprehensively modernize the country’s infrastructure,” the minister said.
