Continue the Change Floor Leader Denkov Says Russia Suspected in Black Sea Ship Attack, Calls for Stronger Response 2026

Continue the Change Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov, speaking in the parliamentary lobby on Thursday, said that Russia is the interested party in the incident involving two ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, not Ukraine, and that the working hypothesis is that the attack came from Russia. “The Government wants irrefutable evidence before taking diplomatic action,” Denkov said. He was speaking about Wednesday’s meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security (CCNS) convened by President Iliana Iotova.
“The consensus we reached at the CCNS was that the situation is extremely risky and that everything possible must be done, together with other countries, to put an end to this aggression. The difference lies in exactly how to proceed,” he added. “On one hand, the main focus of the Government, the Prime Minister, Ministers, and President, is on how to reassure citizens, but the nature of the problem must be clearly stated. And the problem is that there is shooting in the Black Sea. Moreover, reports indicate that even insurance companies are now refraining from insuring ships. And this, in turn, puts supplies at risk, specifically, the tankers that are supposed to supply Lukoil,” Denkov pointed out.
“The question is what those measures should be. We agreed that measures calling on the EU and the UN have their place, we support what Iliana Iotova read aloud, but they are far from sufficient. All the measures under discussion are quite long-term. I did not hear a clear answer as to why we are not working with the leading countries in anti-drone systems,” Denkov said.
There was an in-depth discussion of the situation that arose following the incident, according to Denkov, participants at the meeting agreed that military operations are taking place in the Black Sea and are affecting commercial ships, which has serious economic and political consequences.
Continue the Change (CC) also reported that it had collected and submitted to the National Assembly the necessary signatures requesting an extraordinary sitting of Parliament as early as next Tuesday, at which officials would be heard regarding the decree granting a pardon to Ognyan Atanasov, known as the “Petrich Escobar”. In addition to Continue the Change, GERB-UDF and Democratic Bulgaria signed the request.
The initiative for an extraordinary sitting on the matter was announced to the media in Parliament on Tuesday by CC Chair Assen Vassilev. The political party demands the hearing of the Director General of the Directorate General for the Execution of Sentences and the Director of the Sofia Prison. CC insists on receiving information on the preparation, review, and issuance of the medical reports; details from the prison on the information submitted about Atanasov’s behaviour in connection with his pardon; whether an incident that occurred on November 16, 2022, a fight at the prison hospital, was recorded; was the Pardons Commission notified about the incident before the issuance of the presidential pardon decree, CC MP Velislav Velichkov explained.
Atanasov was pardoned by President Iliana Iotova while she served as vice president on medical grounds.
