Democratic Bulgaria Deputy Floor Leader Bozhanov Says Indirect Indications Point to Russian Military Operation in Black Sea Attack 2026

All indirect indications suggest that the drone attacks on two merchant ships in the Black Sea were an operation by Russian military units, Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) Deputy Floor Leader Bozhidar Bozhanov told reporters in Parliament on Thursday.
Bozhanov criticized Bulgarian authorities for not naming Russia in connection with the incident. “The important thing is that those in power, both [President] Iliana Iotova and [Prime Minister] Rumen Radev, refuse to mention Russia, most likely because that is [Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey] Lavrov’s position and they are waiting for [Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry] Peskov to praise them again. This is a subservient stance. It is irresponsible and does nothing to serve Bulgaria’s national interest or security,” Bozhanov said.
He said that DB had proposed several points for inclusion in the declaration of the Consultative Council on National Security, which met on Wednesday to discuss the current risks and threats to Bulgaria’s maritime security and critical Infrastructure in the context of the war in Ukraine. Two key proposals were not supported, he said: sending a note to Russia demanding an immediate end to any aggressive actions in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, and reaffirming the position of 51 countries, including EU Member States, calling for an immediate Russian ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations.
DB MP and Parliament Deputy Chair Atanas Atanassov said the ship that sank had been travelling from Egypt to Ukraine. The journey would normally take about five days, while the vessel had taken 15, he said. “That is unusual – whether the ship stopped somewhere and what cargo it was carrying are questions that need to be clarified,” Atanassov said.
He also accused “the governing Radev-Iotova tandem” of being reluctant to anger Russia during the election campaign and of seeking to avoid alienating Russophile voters of Progressive Bulgaria.
Atanassov also referred to Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s remarks on Wednesday, when he told reporters to “ask [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy” about the drones. Atanassov noted that Zelenskyy had said the Ukrainian and Bulgarian authorities were in contact and that Kyiv had already provided Sofia with the information it had on the incident.
“Ukraine has provided the Bulgarian authorities with the available information about the drones, yet the Prime Minister says he is unaware of it,” Atanassov said.
